Yes, a perfect score at the Bouchercon — three nominations, three losses. I won’t tell you who beat me, because I only remember in one case. My attitude toward awards in general is a peculiar mix of not giving a damn and wanting to win, and some awards seem to me more valid and important than others.

For example, the Private Eye Writers of America’s Shamus is meaningful because writers decide, that is committees who look at stacks of material and single out a small group of their peers to recognize. But the Anthony is a popularity contest at Bouchercon, allowing attendees to vote when many (if not most) of them haven’t read the books or short stories in question.

Nonetheless, honors are nice, and I managed to attend all three awards events, although Barb went only to the Shamuses.

That event was pretty terrific, at a blues club called the Slippery Noodle, with Bob Randisi interacting with a local blues duo and presenting the awards in a fun way. I surprised him with the Eye, the PWA’s life achievement award, which a group of ex-presidents cooked up behind his back, aided and abetted by Christine Matthews. Bob has done a great deal for the P.I. genre, but his own first-rate body of work tends to get overshadowed by his creation of the PWA and the Shamus awards, and we tried to rectify that. My nomination was the Nate Heller short story (pubbed in EQMM) “The Blonde Tigress.”

The con itself was well-run with a lot going on. I was on two panels and both went very well. One was on continuing other people’s work (well-chaired by Bond author Raymond Benson) and drew a nice crowd despite being early Thursday afternoon. On Friday we did a panel on the Private Eye in the last four decades, with authors representing the decade in which they first published a P.I. story (I was the ‘80s for Heller). This Randisi production was a smash, with a modest-sized room overflowing and revealing the healthy fan interest in private eyes. Both panels received high marks, and I got positive comments about them throughout the con.

One of the topics on the P.I. panel was how we’d been influenced by incoming authors and trends/changes in the genre. One aspect, for example, was Robert B. Parker’s use of a psycho sidekick (Hawk) for his private eye (Spenser), and how that became a standard convention for writers who followed him (Mosley, Crais, etc.) S.J. Rozan agreed with me that this was a cop-out, and I made the point that my protagonists do their own psychotic dirty work. But what I realized (but did not get around to mentioning on the panel) was that I have not been influenced by anybody in the genre since around 1970. I never thought of sidekicks as a trend, just something Parker came up with that a bunch of other writers imitated. The last crime writer to influence me in a major way was Richard Stark, who I discovered in 1967. It seems odd to me (and this was pointed out on the panel) that some of the newer writers have read Dennis Lahane and other contemporary PI writers, but not Hammett, Chandler, Spillane and Ross MacDonald.

My two signings, after the panels, were hugely well-attended, which is very gratifying when the only lines that compare are for guys like Michael Connelly (the guest of honor) and a handful of women writers.

We saw many friends, including John and Barbara Lutz, Bill Crider, Donald Bain, the Crimespree Jordans, Harlan Coben, Gary Phillips, Christine Matthews, Sara Paretsky, Otto Penzler, and so many more. Some meetings with friends were of the ships-passing-in-the-night variety, others were meetings and/or luncheons. Agent Dominick Abel threw a great evening dinner party at a funky Italian restaurant, for example, and we had another Italian lunch with uber-fan Brad Schwartz and his dad. Matt Clemens and I had a delightful meeting with our Kensington editor, Michaela Hamilton, wherein the three of us brainstormed our way into the second J.C. Harrow novel (the first, You Can’t Stop Me, comes out in March). Barb and I sat with the editors of EQMM and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine at the Shamus dinner, and hobnobbed with Penguin editors at their cocktail party. Business and fun blends in a very cool way at a Bouchercon.

The only bad thing was the Hyatt hotel’s geography — the con in this rather sterile, cold-looking hotel was spread out over four floors, and you never felt like you’d seen everybody — and you hadn’t. My Vertigo/DC editor, Will Dennis, was there, for example, and we never connected.

On the long car trip from Iowa to Indiana, Barb and I had a chance to listen to an advance pressing of The New Adventures of Mike Hammer, Vol. 2: The Little Death with Stacy Keach as Mike Hammer, a full-cast original audio novel for Blackstone (December) that I wrote based on a Mickey Spillane short story. With no modesty whatsoever, I will tell you that it is great — hugely entertaining for both casual and hardcore Hammer fans. And Keach is wonderful.

Lots of interest in Quarry at the con, but also nice comments about two series that are either over or an hiatuses: the Criminal Minds books and the Jack and Maggie Starr “comics” mysteries. Most of all, Barb and I encountered “Barbara Allan” fans who were glad to hear about the new one, Antiques Bizarre, coming out next Spring. We gave away copies of the first book, Antiques Roadkill, at the big book bazaar Sunday morning, an experiment to get readers reading series and authors they hadn’t before sampled. Something of a mad house, but an interesting idea not quite run amok.

Next year it’s San Francisco, and the year after St. Louis.

Matt Clemens is attending the con, and so is Barb, though neither are doing panels this year.

I’ll be at the Shamus Awards, where the Nate Heller short story “The Blonde Tigress” has been nominated (it appeared in EQMM). That’s Friday evening at 7:00 pm. at the evocatively named Slippery Noodle.

I continue on my insane effort to wrap up the new Heller, BYE BYE, BABY, before Barb and I leave early Thursday morning. I have been maintaining a punishing pace, but I enjoy being immersed in a novel I’m writing. Even if I get the three remaining chapters written, however, the book will not be “done” done. I will still have to put together the bibliographic end note, which is chapter-length, as well as I do a complete polish of the whole thing. So another week’s work awaits. Why batter myself like this? It’s an artificial deadline, to replace the real one I missed long ago, plus I want to avoid the frustration and distraction of going away for four or five days with the story nearly told.

My friend Stu Kaminsky passed away a few days ago. We were often talked about in the same breath, because of his Toby Peters character and my Nate Heller, and in the late ‘80s we seriously considered doing a crossover novel (we even had a subject picked out). Stu was a fine writer, but what I most remember is the warm way he treated me. We spent a day together once, which included seeing ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (his first time seeing this film for which he wrote the English dialogue in its uncut form), and thereafter whenever he saw me, he treated me the way you would your best friend. We were not close, rarely spoke on the phone, but when we were together, we might have been brothers. This is unique in my experience and I won’t forget it.

The Little Death Recording in Chicago, Trash ‘n’ Treasures

This Monday (July 13), at a recording studio in Chicago, my novel for audio, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF MIKE HAMMER: THE LITTLE DEATH, was recorded with Stacy Keach and a gifted cast, including Second City/SNL star Tim Kazurinsky. The cast did great and producer/director Carl Amari was generous enough to allow me to sit in and give occasional direction myself. My pal Mike Cornelison (ELIOT NESS himself) came along from Des Moines to play Captain Pat Chambers of Homicide.

This three-hour, full-cast audio novel will be released by Blackstone Audio in October, and I have to say I’m really, really excited about it. Hearing Stacy read THE GOLIATH BONE was a thrill, but to be in the studio with him reading my lines (with Tim, Mike and other wonderful Chicago actors) made the thirteen year-old Mike Hammer fan in me very happy indeed.

The Romantic Times 2008 Toby Bromberg Award for Most Humorous Mystery

Here is how the Romantic Times editors describe the honor:

“The Toby Bromberg Award is named in honor of RT’s longtime mystery reviewer, who passed away in 2002. To honor Toby Bromberg’s memory and to celebrate her enthusiasm and love for authors and the mystery genre, we have created an annual award to be given in her name.

“This year we are proud to announce the seventh recipient of the Toby Bromberg Award for Most Humorous Mystery Novel, Barbara Allan aka Max Allan Collins and Barbara Collins, for ANTIQUES FLEE MARKET, published by Kensington.”

Barb and I are thrilled to receive this award, the first such honor for the Trash ‘n’ Treasures series (although not our first nomination), and are particularly happy that the book and series were singled out for this particular award. The humor aspect of those books — often commented on by EQMM reviewer Jon Breen, who has expressed a suspicion that we are spoofing the cozy genre in the Brandy Borne and Mother mysteries — is second only in our collective mind to character.

We would be the first to admit that the mystery itself is of a secondary concern to us. We often comment on the fact that the series we love most — Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe novels — is one whose entries we can re-visit again and again, rarely remembering “who did it,” but having so much fun with Archie and his boss that we don’t care. In fact, we like it, because we can enjoy the stories again and again.

Antques Bizarre

This is not to say we don’t care about the mystery. Just that it’s not our major concern, although we’ve tried to work on that side of things, and the forthcoming ANTIQUES BIZARRE (next March, as usual from Kensington) is probably the best mystery we’ve done so far.

ANTIQUES FLEE MARKET will be out in paperback in November, with a terrific new cover. In the spirit of humor, we’ve been lobbying for more comic-oriented artwork and Kensington has really come through for us, as you can see here.

I know some of my fans — the hard-bitten Nate Heller and Quarry bunch — avoid these novels. I often have male fans tell me their wives love the books. Fine. But be secure enough in your masculinity to read these, because humor plays a big part in most of my work, and these novels are the funniest stuff I (help) turn out.

Whether we’re spoofing the genre of not, well…let me fill you in on how we came to do this series. Barb and I had done two standalone novels together. The first, REGENERATION, was a minor paperback original bestseller; the second, BOMBSHELL, our Marilyn Monroe Meets Nikita Khrushchev thriller, wound up at Five Star, where it was one of that small company’s best sellers…but we’d had higher hopes. We thought it was time to find a series to do together.

Antques Bizarre

Michaela Hamilton, who had been my first Nate Heller editor at NAL, had moved to Kensington Books. We were chatting on the phone about how nice it would be to work together again, but she said, “I’m doing cozies…that’s not exactly your cup of cyanide.” (Cozy editors talk that way.) (Actually, they don’t. I made that up.) Anyway, I said Barb and I had been wanting to do a series together, and that we were big Christie fans (although Christie isn’t really that cozy — those are nasty, violent books) and would love to take a swing at the genre.

We wrote a proposal from my notion of doing a Red Hat Society mystery, with an elderly eccentric detective and her forty-something widowed daughter. Michaela wrote back and said we didn’t understand her market. She needed a young-ish female protagonist, although a sidekick older gal was fine, as well as the following: a cute pet, a memorable, even exotic setting and an overall gimmick (i.e., crossword puzzles, recipes, etc.).

As a writing exercise (since I generally don’t believe in writing to market), we took a shot. We made the young protagonist a Prozac-addled divorcee of around thirty who had screwed up her marriage in the big city and went running home to Mama. We made Mama a bipolar diva of local theater who made Auntie Mame look low-key. For the cute pet, we (not caring for cats) gave our girls a diabetic and blind dog (based on a pet of ours we’d recently lost). For the town, the “exotic” setting was just our hometown, changing Muscatine to “Serenity” (after the TV series), making it an “antiquing” town (which to some degree it was). For our gimmick, we had antiques, but didn’t go the big ticket route, Sotheby’s and so on, rather having our girls be flea market, yard sale and even dumpster-diving bottom feeders. We gave our sample chapters outrageous puns for titles, and put on a supposedly helpful (but mostly just funny) tips for collecting antiques.

When we were finished, we really liked what we had (two chapters and a proposal), but thought Michaela would roll her eyes at our blatantly tongue-in-cheek, even subversive approach. We figured we had something Kensington would turn down, but that we might be able to market elsewhere. Instead, we got the best acceptance letter ever — one word in an e-mail: “More.”

We are working on the fifth novel now — ANTIQUES KNOCK-OFF. As for how we can collaborate and stay married, I’ll save that for a later update.

Seduction of the Innocent: Live @ San Diego Liner Notes

First off, I should note that THE FIRST QUARRY has now received two nominations, for an Anthony and a Barry Award, both for best paperback. The fields of other nominees are tough but it’s nice to see the book noticed. It is frankly weird to have started back up a series I began in college in the ’70s…but fun. Both awards are given at Bouchercon, and I’ll be there.

Second, for eastern Iowa fans and friends: Crusin’ is playing July 4 on the Pearl City Plaza patio for the Underground restaurant. This is the same location where we played not long ago to a capacity audience. We’ll start around 6:45 PM and play up to and for a while after the fireworks (with a great view from the patio). We are doing a mix of originals and classic rock, leaning on bands we appeared with.

When I did that 4 favorites thing last week, I inevitably left some favorites out. There were many of ’em, but I should probably have included LI’L ABNER as one of the four musicals/comedies I could watch over and over. Can’t believe I left that out. It has my favorite exchange in any movie, when Abner (Peter Palmer) asks Appasionata Von Climax (Stella Stevens) about the arrangement with General Bullmoose:

“Does you get bed and bored?”

“Extremely.”

Among the many TV shows I listed, I should have included THE MATCH GAME, particularly the Richard Dawson years. Apparently he didn’t get along with Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly, but they were a great comic trio. You need to seek out THE LIFE OF REILLY, by the way, the wonderful one man show movie with CNR near the end of his life. Very talented and funny man.

Elvis Costello would have been among my favorite male singers but I am among those he continues to irritate with his non-rock ‘n’ roll albums. The current blue grass thing is listenable, at least, unlike the opera singer one (the woman sang horribly off-key) which I threw off the Centennial Bridge crossing from Davenport to Rock Island (the CD, not the female opera singer, though I would have if I’d had the chance).

Seduction of the Innocent: The Golden Age CD Cover

The San Diego Con is coming up, and Seduction of the Innocent — my “comic book” rock band — is a guest. We aren’t playing, because the con doesn’t have the right venue for us. But we will be doing several signings (dates TBA), and will have 200 copies of an official bootleg of our 1999 gig at San Diego. It includes lots of garage band stuff and a few originals. If we bring any copies home, they will be available here.

I wrote liner notes, but eventually had to edit them way down. I thought you might like to see the longer first draft:

It started with my son Nate, in 1987 only five years old and listening to Dr. Demento. Which meant I was listening to Dr. Demento, too, and got interested in “Fish Heads” and “Party in Your Pants” and other great bad-taste tunes from Barnes & Barnes. I knew Bill Mumy was half of that duo, and approached him at a San Diego Comic Con dance honoring Jack Kirby. He signed something for me, we chatted, I got introduced to Miguel Ferrer, and (since I was a comics pro) got invited to hang out. I knew Steve Leialoha through cartoonist Trina Robbins, and he joined this informal gang as we stood taking in a band that none of us liked. I said to Bill, “We could go up there cold and do better.” (I knew Miguel had been a session drummer.) Bill agreed. Steve, in his low-key way, smiled and said, “I play bass.” Somebody from the con (Jackie Estrada?) eavesdropped all this, and by the end of the evening we had been invited to play at the next San Diego Con. Miguel named the band “Seduction of the Innocent” that very night.

My ‘60s revival band Crusin’, back in Iowa (still together!), had a list of garage-band stuff that Seduction built its set list around. Bill added in some very hip things, like “Cinnamon Girl,” “All Along the Watch Tower” and “Shake Your Hips,” and we practiced in his living room, blowing out all the speakers on his stereo (I don’t believe we ever reimbursed him). It fell together pretty easily and we liked each other’s company, and laughed a lot. That’s all it takes for a band to work.

Over the next decade, we played San Diego numerous times and had a few other assorted gigs (Wondercon, Charlotte Heroes Con, a private party at the Santa Monica Pier). Chris Christensen (who had produced a Will Eisner LP) offered to put out a Seduction CD. We wrote songs for it, recorded it at Bill’s (not using his stereo speakers) and it came out well. “Pussy Whipped” got some airplay, even back in Iowa (Crusin’ had to learn it). Around then, Chris joined the band (playing drums when Miguel sang out front, and guitar when Miguel drummed) and was a terrific addition. We made a music video of “The Truth Hurts” (with our friend Brandon Lee) and played the original stuff at cons. Finally San Diego got too big and unwieldy to find room for us, and this live performance was our last to date…although smaller cons are free to inquire about gigs. We are actors and artists, and can be bought.
