True Detective is the first Nathan Heller and a great, natural entry point into the series for new readers (although really, you can start with any of the Hellers and skip around). The 1984 Shamus Award Winner for Best P.I. Hardcover, True Detective earned some very impressive raves:

True D is the best Heller, top 5 anyway. I just read it
again for the 4th time.
BTW, any ideas on the next Heller? He’s your bread and
butter and you have at least 10 good scenario’s left to
inject him in. Mostly in the 1945-55 era.
I’m for Neon Mirage, if only for that gunfight near the end. One of the best shoot-outs in crime fiction, I’d say.
